The Portrait Commission Process

A commissioned portrait is a collaborative process, capturing both the likeness and the character of the subject. While every portrait is unique, the process follows a few key steps.

1. Initial conversation

We’ll start with a chat about your vision for the portrait, including the subject, preferred size, style and any particular ideas you have in mind.

2. Sitting and reference photographs

Where possible, I prefer to work from my own photography, which allows me to explore the subject and capture the details that will inform the portrait. Depending on the commission, we can arrange a sitting, or I can work from suitable existing photographs.

3. Composition and planning

We’ll develop the composition together, discussing the layout, background and other details before settling on the final scope of the piece. Once the size and composition are agreed upon, I’ll confirm the price and estimated timeframe.

How much does a portrait cost?

The price depends on the complexity of the portrait, particularly the number of subjects and the level of background detail. As a guide, prices start at approximately $900 for a 8 × 10 inch head study with simple background (unframed).

How long does a portrait take?

Most commissions take approximately 3–4 months to complete, depending on the complexity of the piece. I’ll confirm an estimated timeframe when we discuss your commission.
